North East leads Amazon to create 10,000 new permanent jobs in the UK


Amazon says that it is creating thousands of permanent jobs in the North East this year.

In total the ecommerce giant expects to recruit 10,000 permanent staff and 20,000 seasonal workers.

It has already recruited 3,000 to its network of fulfilment centres, sort centres and delivery stations, including its recently opened operation in Darlington.

Its this fulfilment centre, in addition to 2 new ones in Durham and Sutton-in-Ashfield, which will be at the centre of the job creation programme.

“Our people have played a critical role in serving customers in these unprecedented times and the new roles will help us continue to meet customer demand and support small and medium sized businesses selling on Amazon,” said Stefano Perego, Amazon’s Vice President of European Customer Fulfilment.

“The new state-of-the-art robotics fulfilment centres in the North East and the Midlands, as well as the thousands of additional roles at sites across the country, underline our commitment to the people and communities in which we operate. We are employing thousands of talented individuals in a diverse range of good jobs from operations managers and tech professionals through to people to handle customer orders.”

The new roles will include engineers, graduates, and IT professionals.

The recruitment drive will mean Amazon’s total permanent UK workforce will rise to more than 40,000 people.
