New marketing chief for Midlands-HQ’d collective as Northern expansion continues

Nottingham-based marketing agency collective The Boda Group, which this year began its Northern expansion in earnest with the opening of an office in Manchester, has appointed Alex Smith as group head of marketing.

Smith will lead brand and marketing strategy across all of the group’s businesses, which includes digital marketing and PR agency Tank, brand communications agency Warbox, and customer success consultancy Kaptive.

With extensive experience from senior SaaS marketing roles, Smith has built and scaled in-house teams, led international campaigns, and partnered with agencies across multiple markets. His group-level role will focus on strengthening The Boda Group’s brand presence, building its profile across target sectors, and supporting growth through coordinated marketing activity.

Phil Kelsey, commercial and strategy director at The Boda Group, said: “Alex brings a wealth of experience in helping brands present the best version of themselves, while keeping strategies aligned to the changing needs of their markets. His appointment at group level reflects our ambition to grow the Group’s collective presence, while giving each agency the marketing drive it needs to fuel its own organic growth.”

New appointee Smith added: “This is a unique opportunity to play a part in shaping the future of The Boda Group. With the Manchester office underway and our wider network of businesses – from Warbox and Kaptive to our investment in Versaclimber – all gaining pace, I’m eager to harness that momentum and drive the group towards long-term success.”

The appointment comes as The Boda Group continues to invest in its agency network, with Tank recently opening new office space in Manchester at Beehive Mill in Ancoats, the iconic building that once housed the legendary Sankeys Soap nightclub.

Founded in 2009 in Nottingham, Tank is dedicated to helping its broad range of B2B, B2C and tech clients to make their mark, using a strategic mix of brand PR, digital PR, content and digital services.

With clients including leading data and AI platform SAS, building product distributor and manufacturer Eurocell, iconic hospitality brand The Ivy and betting giant Betway, Tank is home to almost 50 specialists. This year, the agency was named as the fifth fastest growing consultancy outside of London as part of PR Week’s Top 150 rankings.
