The New European to go on sale in Liverpool and Manchester

Pro-EU newspaper The New European, which goes to print for the first time on Friday, will be distributed in Manchester and Liverpool.

Launch editor Matt Kelly said he only plans for the paper to exist for “a short while.”

Kelly, the company’s chief content officer, said he wanted to produce a printed product that reflected “very clearly” the values of the 48% of the electorate who voted to Remain in the EU.

He also described it was “a paper of the moment” which “may pass soon enough.”

The New European will be priced at £2 and will initially run for four issues, with subsequent print runs decided by reader interest.

Distribution of the new title will be focused on the mainly Remain areas of London and the South as well as Manchester and Liverpool.

Writing on, Kelly said: “Nobody launches a new national newspaper in a few days. But we will.

“Why? Because this is a paper of the moment and that moment may pass soon enough. Every week’s delay weakens our opportunity to command attention. But also because we can.

“The traditional model of months of market research, designing dummy after dummy, and drawing up three year business plans and a team of journalists, designers, marketeers and circulation managers seems unnecessary if you only plan to exist for a short while.

“Cut away those big ticket items and you are left with a relatively conservative cost base and the opportunity to act with remarkable agility.

“If we were a digital company, trying to spin out an innovative model to see how an audience might respond, nobody would bat an eye.

“But for a legacy print business, steeped in tradition and century-old brands, it seems like outrageous temerity.

“It will not be perfect. Newspapers are not supposed to be perfect. “But it will be energetic, eclectic, celebratory, thoughtful and in places wonderfully random.”
