John Motson has apologised to Millwall striker Tom Elliott for describing him as “big, black and brave” during a TalkSport commentary.

The 73-year-old broadcaster, who joined TalkSport last summer having retired after half a century with the BBC, made the remarks before Millwall’s FA Cup fifth-round win at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

TalkSport, which has removed the broadcast from its website, said it treated the incident “very seriously”.

Motson is understood to have apologised privately to Elliott, who was now keen to draw a line under the matter.

A spokesperson for TalkSport said: “We reviewed a live commentary by John Motson and decided to remove it from replay. TalkSport and all of its broadcasters take such matters very seriously and would never wish to offend.”
