Johnston Press shareholders have today unanimously backed the regional publisher’s purchase of national daily the i.
At a general meeting, 99.85% of shareholders voted in favour of the £24m deal with just 0.15% against.
A 62,233,091 shares were cast in favour of the acquisition, with 93,468 against and 6,297 withheld, effectively clearing the last potential hurdle.
The meeting comes ahead of this week’s closure of the print edition of The Independent, i’s stablemate, with the final edition of the Independent on Sunday having gone out yesterday.
The Independent will become an online-only product, and owner ESI Media recently announced details of a new subscription-only app.
