Johnston Press has appointed John Bills, currently the acting group managing director, to the role on a permanent basis.
He will manage five divisional managing directors and report to chief executive Ashley Highfield. He’ll also be responsible for the publisher’s media sales centre.

Bills, who has been at the Yorkshire Post owner since 2008 after working in several roles for Trinity, took over the role on an interim basis in June.
He’s previously been MD of the publisher’s North Midlands and South Yorkshire division.
Highfield said: “John has a solid background in strategic operations and business transformation and is a strong leader who will bring inspiration, motivation and positive direction to the role.
“He will be instrumental in forging stronger relationships between our editorial and commercial teams as we continue to grow our business.”
