Jeremy Kyle show axed following death of guest

The Jeremy Kyle Show has been permanently cancelled by ITV following the death of a guest who took part in the programme.

Steven Dymond (below) was found dead on May 9th, a week after filming a show during which he had taken a lie detector test. ITV CEO Carolyn McCall said: “Given the gravity of recent events we have decided to end production of The Jeremy Kyle Show.”

ITV had initially suspended filming, but came under pressure to take firmer action, with the Prime Minister’s spokesman describing the death “deeply concerning”. ITV said it would “continue to work with Jeremy Kyle on other projects.” The Jeremy Kyle Show was filmed and produced at MediaCityUK in Salford.

Dymond’s body was found at an address in Portsmouth on May 9th. Hampshire Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious. An inquest is likely to be opened within the next few days following the result of the post-mortem investigation, according to Portsmouth coroner’s office.

The pre-recorded episode he had taken part in was on the subject of infidelity. A member of the audience told BBC News that Dymond had “collapsed to the ground” and was “sobbing” when he failed a lie detector test.

The Jeremy Kyle Show was the most popular programme in ITV’s daytime schedule, with an average audience of one million viewers and a 22% audience share. All previous episodes have also been taken down from the channel’s catch-up service, ITV Hub, and episodes will not air on ITV2 either.

ITV’s statement in full:

“Given the gravity of recent events we have decided to end production of The Jeremy Kyle Show. The Jeremy Kyle Show has had a loyal audience and has been made by a dedicated production team for 14 years, but now is the right time for the show to end.

“Everyone at ITV’s thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of Steve Dymond. The previously announced review of the episode of the show is under way and will continue.

“ITV will continue to work with Jeremy Kyle on other projects.”
