First Minister opens BT’s new multimillion pound office

First Minister, John Swinney, has officially opened BT Group’s new office in Dundee.

The multimillion pound waterfront development is part of a wider £1bn regeneration of the city.

First announced in July 2020, around 1000 staff from its consumer and business divisions will be based at the site.

The investment comes through its Better Workplace Programme, one of the largest workplace improvement schemes of its type ever undertaken in the UK. It’s seen it shift from having 300 locations, to just 30.

“As one of the largest private sector employers in Scotland I’m excited to see our Dundee office open for business. Our investment in this state-of-the-art office will help us to retain and attract the best people as we transform BT to give better service to our customers, while supporting the broader regeneration of Dundee,” said Allison Kirkby, Chief Executive, BT Group.

“We’re also continuing to make major investments in Scotland’s networks, with more than half of Scotland now able to get full fibre from Openreach, and three quarters of the population covered by 5G from EE. We’re working closely with our partners in government to ensure we maximise the potential for these networks to create new possibilities for the public and private sectors, and support the economic success of the nation.”

BT Group is responsible for generating £1 in every £130 produced in Scotland, according to a recent independent report. It also generated £1.3bn Scotland’s economy in “Gross Value Added” (GVA), during the 2023/24 financial year.

“The opening of this new office is an important moment in Dundee’s remarkable economic transformation, reflecting Scotland’s commitment to digital innovation, growth, and opportunity. BT’s decision to invest in Dundee is a powerful statement of confidence in the city and Scotland. It secures around 1,000 local jobs, providing good opportunities for apprentices and workers to develop their skills and drive forward their careers,” stated First Minister John Swinney.

“The Scottish Government’s approach is clear. We are actively creating the conditions for businesses to invest, grow and succeed. Through initiatives like the Tay Cities Region Deal – investing £150 million, over ten years – we’re supporting innovation, skills development, and economic growth, all of which come together in this new office development.”

The new building includes a ‘street landscape,’ with areas for people to socialise while looking over Dundee and the River Tay.
