Liverpool-based brand and digital studio Smiling Wolf has been appointed to lead two major culture projects in the North West.
Following a competitive, multi-agency process, the studio was selected to deliver a new brand identity for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and its home in Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. The Philharmonic occupies a unique dual role as an internationally recognised orchestra and as a landmark civic venue, with the creative project exploring how the organisation can maintain a strong sense of heritage and occasion while remaining open, relevant and welcoming to a broad and evolving audience.
The appointment underscores Smiling Wolf’s expertise in guiding heritage-led cultural institutions through the complex challenges of relevance, public value and long-term identity.

It follows another high-profile cultural commission, with the studio currently collaborating with Oldham Coliseum Theatre, where it is shaping the organisation’s future brand and identity in preparation for the launch of its revamped venue in 2027.
The historic Greater Manchester venue was closed, seemingly permanently, in March 2023 when the Arts Council made the controversial decision to cut its funding. However it was saved following a public outcry and a major campaign led by Coronation Street actress Julie Hesmondhalgh and supported by local residents and key figures from the local acting community including Christopher Eccleston, Maxine Peake and Suranne Jones. The original Victorian building is now undergoing a £10 million restoration and Oldham Council has reversed its original decision to build a new, smaller venue, choosing instead to support the restoration of the existing building. Restoration was initially planned to complete in 2025, but the reopening was delayed by complex work, and the venue has now targeted a 2026 return in time for the pantomime season.
Simon Rhodes, creative director at Smiling Wolf, said: “We are thrilled to be working with such incredible cultural institutions in our home region.
“Both the Liverpool Philharmonic and the Oldham Coliseum Theatre allow us to explore how civic pride, authority and excellence can sit alongside accessibility and invitation, creating meaningful connections with audiences today and in the future.”
