The theme of this year’s conference is Europe: The challenges facing the North and the next generation of entrepreneurs. The conference chair is Professor Phil Harris of the University of Chester.

David Willetts was Minister for Universities and Science from 2010-2014 and before that was a shadow Conservative Minister.

He became Executive Chairman of The Resolution Foundation in June 2015 and is a visiting Professor of King’s College London.

In this keynote address he will draw upon his own high level ministerial experience to share his vision, hopes and fears for the next generation of UK students and academics and will explore the theme, does Government (of any colour) really understand education?

Followed by questions and panel discussion.

THE UNIVERSITY ENTREPRENEURS CHALLENGE 2016

Introduced by David Taylor CBE – Businessman and Chairman of The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

Six companies spun out of Northern universities or HE institutions will go head to head in a special showcase which will demonstrate the range, diversity and ingenuity of firms and entrepreneurs emerging from our institutions.

They will face experienced and professional judges who will question their plans and strategy for growth and development.

At stake a cash prize to invest in their business and the potential support of mentors.

This unique event focussing on new companies in the North is staged in association with key sponsors and backers and is produced by Alison Tarpey Black with Rob McLoughlin OBE, founder of Educate North and former executive producer of Granada Television’s enterprise series ‘Flying Start’.

The results of this challenge will be revealed at the Awards ceremony on the night
