EE officially switches on its 5G service in Manchester today, offering speeds of up to 1 gigabyte per second.

The mobile network is launching the service in Manchester, London, Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast as well as “the busiest parts” of Hull, Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle and Sheffield.

“Our 5G network will give EE customers even faster, more reliable connections where they need it most,” said Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s Consumer division.

EE demonstrated the technology in an event last night featuring Stormzy. Streamed via 5G, the gig was also presented in virtual reality.

5G should provide a more reliable data connection, with the majority of users seeing an increase in speeds of 100-150Mbps on their devices.

Vodafone, which has opened an Innovation Hub at MediaCityUK, has been trialling 5G technology, including holographic streams and virtual reality across the North West, is set to put its service live within the next few weeks.
