Over six million viewers tuned in to watch the finale of Peter Kay’s Car Share, which aired last night.

The Greater Manchester-set sitcom, which aired on BBC One at 10pm, picked up 6.1million viewers for the one-off special.

The second series of the Bafta-winning show had ended on an emotional cliffhanger last year when Kay’s character John failed to reciprocate the advances of his colleague, Kayleigh (Sian Gibson).

Kay had initially said there were no plans for more episodes, but fans demanded more, with more than 100,000 people signing a petition calling for a different pay-off.

And the Bolton-born comic later announced two more episodes – an improvised show, Car Share: Unscripted, which was shown earlier this month, and last night’s finale.

Critics were generally warm about last night’s sign-off, with The Telegraph calling it “perfect, uproarious, adorable” and The Arts Desk labelling it “a wonderful treat”.
