Athena Media has won a Grand Award and Gold for its documentary The Kinder Letters at the New York Radio Festival.
The company, which has an office at Salford’s Media City as well as in Dublin, was also a finalist with its documentary Bright Sparks.
All in all, 39 awards were made to 22 different UK indies, with a third of them based outside London.
Will Jackson, MD of the Radio Independents Group, said: “UK indies’ success at the these prestigious awards is now a familiar story.
“This shows how the sector is constantly striving to produce ever-better programming to ever-better standards.
“I’m really pleased to see companies outside London well represented, and this bodes well for radio listeners once more BBC hours are opened to competition from indies.
“These diverse voices are crucial in enabling the BBC to better represent the whole of the UK on its radio services.”
University of Salford graduate Robert Forshaw was awarded bronze in the best UK student drama category for his drama A Favela.
