Ahead of Yorkshire Day tomorrow, Asda has finally come clean. It’s pronounced t’Asda.
That’s being underlined by a physical change to the store signage at Asda Barnsley, that will remain in place until September.
It’s to play on the ongoing debate as to whether customers should be going to “Asda” or “The Asda”, however, it appears everyone’s wrong and it should be t’Asda.
“Yorkshire has been part of Asda’s story since day one, so Yorkshire Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the county and the people who have supported us for generations,” said a spokesperson for t’Asda.

“The debate over whether it’s ‘Asda’ or ‘The Asda’ has become a great British talking point, but in Yorkshire there’s always been another way to say it. Renaming our Barnsley store t’ASDA is a fun tribute to our roots and a celebration of the community that has proudly called us that for years.
“In an age where headlines are increasingly filled with AI-generated images and digital stunts, we wanted to create something that people could experience for themselves, a real-life celebration that brings a smile to our customers and communities alike.”
Asda started in 1949 in Knottingley, West Riding of Yorkshire. Tomorrow, customers will be welcomed with white Yorkshire roses and staff using their best Yorkshire accents.
