Former Dalesman editor announces his new role after online appeal

Jon Stokoe

Former Dalesman editor Jon Stokoe has announced his appointment as the editor of five of Newsquest’s Yorkshire weekly newspapers.

Stokoe will take charge of the Craven Herald, Illkley Gazette, Keighley News, Ryedale Gazette & Herald and Wharfedale Observer.

He launched a public appeal seeking work last month after it was revealed his two year stint at The Dalesman was set to end on 24th September.

It follows the Dalesman Publishing Company announcement in August of the appointment of Dan Clare as Editor-in-Chief, set to start his new role in October.

Stokoe posted on Twitter at the time: “I have news. 24 September sees my time at The Dalesman and Cumbria Magazine end.

“I need a fresh challenge and want to learn new things while utilising my communication skills I have picked up since I started out as a trainee journalist in 1995.

“Those skills, I’m proud to say, have seen me become editor of my home town newspaper, the Whitby Gazette, as well as become only the seventh editor in the 82-year history of Yorkshire’s favourite magazine, The Dalesman.

“But the world is evolving and I need to too. So if you want an honest, hard-working team player who doesn’t know the meaning of nine to five, please get in touch.

“I’m available. I’m cheap(ish). And I can make a decent brew.”

Prior to his role at the Dalesman, Stokoe has had a variety of reporting roles and was the editor of the Whitby Gazette until 2013.

He will begin his new role with Newsquest on the 11th October.
