The Salford-based arm of indie Channel X has been commissioned by CBBC to produce a third series of its award-winning children’s sitcom, So Awkward.

The second series (13 x 30 mins) was filmed last summer in Manchester and will return to television screens this summer.

It’s a comedy about socially awkward friends Lily, Martha and Jas who eschew parties, netball practice and sleepovers and instead spend their time at chess club, doing homework and watching documentaries.

Alan Marke, MD of Channel X, said: “So Awkward came about when an opportunity arose to develop one of our adult comedy scripts into a children’s project. We’re thrilled that the series has been such a hit for CBBC with a third series having just been ordered!

“We wanted to create a smart comedy with quality writing and acting that doesn’t talk down to its audience and we’re really proud of what we’ve achieved.”

Currently celebrating its 30th anniversary, Channel X has in recent years worked on programmes including BBC Four’s BAFTA award-winning Detectorists and BBC Two comedy Hebburn.

So Awkward was created by Julie Bower, produced by Sally Martin for Channel X North and commissioned by Cheryl Taylor at CBBC. Series 2 returns to the channel this summer.
