BBC One’s Citizen Khan recommissioned for third series

BBC One sitcom Citizen Khan has been recommissioned for a third series.

Charlotte Moore, controller of BBC One, and Shane Allen, controller of BBC Comedy Commissioning, have ordered a further 7×30-minute episodes of the studio sitcom.

Set in Birmingham but filmed at MediaCityUK, it’s written by Anil Gupta and Richard Pinto with Adil Ray, with the third series seeing creator Ray returning to the title role alongside Shobu Kapoor, Maya Sondhi and Bhavna Limbachia.

Moore said: “Adil Ray’s finely written family sitcom has grown up on BBC One and established itself as a modern mainstream comedy hit.”

Adil Ray added: “It’s testament to the whole team that we have got this far. I just can’t wait to get back in the studio with the entire Citizen Khan family. As the great British public get even more familiar with Mr Khan, it really excites me when I think about the places we can go. The Bahamas?”

Executive producer is Mark Freeland. There will also be a Citizen Khan Christmas Special on BBC One on December 20.

The 12 episodes of Citizen Khan so far broadcast have have averaged just under 3 million viewers.
