Reports today suggest that Manchester United has signed a new sponsorship deal with Tezos, worth around £20m each year.
It will mark the club’s first move into the cryptocurrency market, with the blockchain operation set to replace AON on its training kits.
Tezos describes itself as an “energy-efficient and self upgradable Proof of Stake blockchain.” It claims to have an average energy footprint of “17 global citizens.”
Why is this important?
A lot has happened this week in the world of blockchains and non-fungible tokens.
Firstly, games publisher, Team17 quickly reversed a decision to release a series of Worms NFT collectables after a huge online backlash.
WWF UK announced that it was to start selling non-fungible tokens and also received criticism from sustainability experts.
