The first images of “darkly comic” thriller, Shy & Lola have been released today.
The series, which has been filming on location in Leeds and Hull comes from screenwriter and novelist Amanda Coe (Apple Tree Yard, The Trial of Christine Keeler).
It’s produced by Clerkenwell Films (Baby Reindeer, The Death of Bunny Munro, The End of the F***ing World), which is part of BBC Studios.

Starring Hayley Squires (Shy) as a cleaner scraping by and dreaming go a new life in Portugal, and Bel Powley (Lola) an ex-model-turned-grifter who arrives in town “with trouble at her heels” it follows the pair as they are forced to become allies when a murder entangles them in the criminal underworld operating in the small, Northern, coastal town.
Beginning as exploited novices, the unlikely duo turn out to have a talent for crime. As they build an operation that threatens to blow the local bad guys out of the water, opposing futures beckon – using their earnings to fund a fresh start, or becoming the new bosses in town.
The series also stars Amber Grappy (One Day, The Baby), Matthew McNulty (Deadwater Fell, Domina), Elizabeth Berrington (Tip Toe, Frauds), Edward Bluemel (Hercule, My Lady Jane), Jordan Bolger (The Witness, This Town) Thomas Turgoose (Mickey 17, Swimming with Men), Joseph Ayre (Hijack, Urchin) and Melanie-Joyce Bermudez, who is making her on-screen debut.
The 6 x 60 minute drama is written by Amanda Coe, with additional episodes written by Emilie Robson and Alys Metcalf, both alumni of BBC Writers.
Sam Donovan (Severance, Widow’s Bay, Down Cemetery Road) is lead director, with Emily Atef directing the second block. The series is produced by Nadia Jaynes (The Responder, Big Mood). The executive producers are Amanda Coe and, for Clerkenwell Films, Rachelle Constant, Petra Fried and Wim De Greef.
The show was commissioned by Lindsay Salt, BBC Director of Drama.
