Former Prem ref Mike Dean fronts Specsavers’ “Very Agreeable Ref Hotline” World Cup campaign

Specsavers, the optical and hearing care retailer, has launched the ‘Very Agreeable Ref Hotline,’ a real-time World Cup fan hotline fronted by former Premier League refereeing and regular TV pundit icon Mike Dean.

The campaign invites football fans to WhatsApp their opinions on controversial decisions, refereeing calls and footballing injustices.

The ‘Very Agreeable Ref Hotline’ taps into the nation’s love of football debate and the turbulent emotions stirred up by football decisions. Rather than settling arguments, they have a unique talent for creating new ones and Specsavers is stepping in to finally help frustrated fans feel heard.

Fans simply WhatsApp their rant, voice note or bold tactical analysis to a dedicated ‘Mike Dean’ number during all matches. They will be responded to with voice notes and videos from Mike himself – helping fans feel validated and playing the role of an ultra-impressionable football mediator who takes every opinion with the utmost seriousness.

Speaking about the campaign, Dean said: “I’ve teamed up with Specsavers again because, after three decades on the pitch, I know how to spot a wrong decision… I also know better than anyone that football fans don’t just want the right decision – they want someone to listen to them. That’s what ‘Very Agreeable Ref Hotline’ is. Whatever you saw out there during the tournament, message me!”

Kim Bull, brand communications Lead at Specsavers added: “You know the feeling – you’re certain you’ve seen it clearly, but no one agrees. With so many big refereeing calls sparking debate this tournament, we thought it was time to call in an expert. Mike Dean’s been there, done it – and now he’s ready to review the nation’s opinions.”

Manchester’s Tangerine was behind the latest campaign, and creative director Martin Kevill added: “As Specsavers’ lead social agency, we’ve seen first-hand just how opinionated fans can be around the big referee calls… and VAR isn’t making those arguments any easier. Mike Dean’s here with Specsavers to listen, nod along and make watching the football a little more fun.”

Throughout the 2026 World Cup, fans can WhatsApp the dedicated number to share their views on controversial decisions. To contact the ‘Very Agreeable Ref Hotline’ message https://wa.me/message/54PGHIEJJ4CXD1 or +447788260587.
