Laughing Lucy Letby seen dancing at wedding while on bail for murdering babies in chilling ITV doc

A shocking new ITV documentary exploring the crimes of baby killer Lucy Letby has revealed images of her smiling and dancing at a friend’s wedding while on police bail for multiple counts of murder.

Lucy Letby: Beyond Reasonable Doubt?, aired on ITV1 and ITVX on Sunday, and includes never-before-seen footage and testimony from Letby’s childhood friend, Dawn Howe. In one scene, Dawn shares wedding photos showing Letby laughing and throwing confetti just months after her arrest in 2018.

Letby, who was convicted in 2023 of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder seven more at the Countess of Chester Hospital, had to obtain police permission to attend the celebration. In the documentary, Dawn says: “There is Lucy at my wedding. I am just so glad she could be there because it was while she was on bail, she had to get special permission to be allowed to come from the police.”

The footage forms part of a wider investigation into the personal history of Letby, who was first arrested in July 2018 and charged in 2020. Dawn, who attended Aylestone Secondary School in Hereford with Letby, reflects on the photos with disbelief: “Shortly after this she was held in custody so… I don’t think Lucy has seen these.”

The programme also revisits Letby’s early ambitions to become a nurse and includes scenes of Dawn returning to their former school. Despite her ongoing support for Letby, Dawn described being “dumbfounded” when the guilty verdicts were announced.

The two-part ITV series – produced by multi-award-winning documentary filmmaker Kirsty Cunningham – explores the complexities and controversies surrounding Letby’s conviction, which remains the subject of an ongoing Criminal Cases Review Commission process.

Cheshire Police declined to comment on the claims raised in the film.
