The University of Salford has appointed Dr Richard Whittle to be its first Professor of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Public Policy.
The move forms part of a wider strategy at Salford Business School to lead interdisciplinary research into responsible AI, public policy and economic transformation.
Whittle is an economist working across AI, behavioural science and decision making and was previously a University Fellow at Salford.
“I’m delighted to be taking on this role at such a pivotal moment in the evolution of AI and its impact on society. Salford Business School is uniquely positioned to lead research that doesn’t just explore what AI can do, but what it should do,” he explained.
“I’m excited to collaborate with colleagues across the University and region to help ensure AI supports inclusive, fair and sustainable futures.”
He is a member of the West Yorkshire Scientific Advisory Group, advises the Manchester Digital Strategy and has been awarded a visiting fellowship at the International Public Policy Observatory, University College London.
