TransPennine Express trials virtual work experience programme

TransPennine Express (TPE) has launched a free virtual work experience programme to give anyone interested in a career in rail the chance to gain a unique behind-the-scenes look at the industry.

The train operator has partnered with careers platform Springpod to offer a course that gives insight into what it’s like to work at TPE, exploring how timetables are put together, what it takes to keep trains running smoothly and what it’s like to work in key roles such as a station assistant or onboard catering.

It features eight modules that include hands-on-activities and core employability skills for rail careers and beyond such as communication, teamwork, and leadership. The modules can be completed at the participant’s own pace.

Nicola Buckley, people director at TransPennine Express, said: “Whether you are just starting out, fancy a career change or just want to find out more about working on the railway, our virtual work experience course is a good place to start.

“It has been designed to give people transferable skills that are going to help build confidence to apply for opportunities either with TPE or other employers in the rail industry and beyond.”

“TPE is now the fastest growing rail operator in the UK, and we want to provide employment opportunities within the communities we serve, as well as provide reliable services across the North of England and Scotland.

The programme is open to anyone aged 13 and above and will run until Monday 5 May 2025. Attendees will receive a certificate of completion which can be used for boost CVs and UCAS statements and other applications.
