Talk About Local is running its first unconference in the North East later this month to bring together community publishers and those interested in local news.

The annual unconference has previously taken place in Stoke, Leeds, Cardiff and Birmingham, but the reason for heading to Teesside, is to launch a new initiative for the area called Talk About Arts, Culture and Place. This will be run in partnership with Yorkshire’s The Culture Vulture website.

“Following a series of Cultural Conversation events we facilitated in Teesside last year we were struck by the warmth and interest towards sharing and connecting across a diverse geographical region. There’s an appetite to tell the story of the creativity across the region, to residents and visitors alike adding another independent voice of the existing media,” explained The Culture Vulture founder, Emma Bearman.

The unconference will take place in Middlesbrough’s Mima on Saturday 28th September. The event format means that the agenda is set by those who attend on the day, previous unconferences have touched on everything from making money online to legal advice.

“There’s a lot of talent in the digital sector around here you’ve only got to see the calibre of the work being featured thanks to initiatives such as RefreshTeesside to see that. We hope that, as well as attracting people from across the UK to Middlesbrough, we also get the opportunity to welcome people involved locally to our unconference,” said Talk About Local MD, Sarah Hartley.

Free tickets must be booked in advance via Eventbrite. Those who can’t attend can follow everything through the hashtag #tal13.
