Manchester-based live streaming radio platform Radio.co, was chosen to power Radio Everyone, a ‘pop-up’ stream that was part of Project Everyone, an initiative started by Comic Relief founder Richard Curtis.
The content was broadcast from September 26 for seven days on the Global Goals website, and syndicated by 600 traditional radio stations globally, in ten different language streams.
Radio Everyone coincided with the build up to a UN convention, where 193 world leaders met in New York to agree to a number of shared ‘global goals’, including fighting poverty. Music artists like Bono, Kasabian and Paloma Faith contributed shows, alongside actors like Hilary Swank and Cate Blanchett. The jingles were made by Peter Gabriel.
Content was pre-recorded and scheduled via Radio.co before being syndicated to traditional radio stations around the world.
James Mulvany, co-founder of Radio.co, said: “The success of Radio Everyone has shown how powerful this new concept of pop-up radio can be – using the internet platform allows DJs to connect from everywhere in the world, and broadcast globally.
“We were expecting the bulk of listeners to be in the western world, but the pop-up radio station had significant listener figures in Kenya, Jamaica, India and Pakistan amongst others.
“The idea of pop-up radio isn’t limited to radio stations, we have already seen that anyone who wants to can create a human-curated audio experience, such as restaurant chains, gyms, churches, event and festival organisers or musicians.”
