The Manchester-born journalist sold his site, MoneySavingExpert, to Moneysupermarket for £87m in 2012 in a deal comprising £35m in cash and £25m in shares.

Shares in Moneysupermarket.com have since risen 153%, surging 59.4% in the last 12 months alone. Last week the company reported a 44% rise in profits to £30.2m in the six months to the end of June.

The move comes ahead of Lewis’ move from editor-in-chief of MoneySavingExpert.com to become its chairman next month.
