Manchester’s npd Studio gives a Shift about plastic

Manchester design studio npd has unveiled the design, development, and manufacture of a reusable, entirely plastic-free vessel for natural deodorant, complete with compostable refills, representing a major step forward in sustainable personal care.

Partnering with the founder of sustainable personal care brand Shift, npd dedicated ten months to creating deodorant packaging that excels in both user experience and environmental impact. After extensive testing of various mechanisms and designs, the team produced a durable, user-friendly, and eco-conscious solution.

The result is a mono-material casing made entirely from aluminium, ensuring full recyclability and the ability to retain its material value indefinitely. Unlike conventional deodorant packaging, which relies heavily on plastic, the design is completely plastic-free, setting a new benchmark for sustainable packaging.

The casing features a straightforward pushing action, making it easy to use. By rethinking the application process, npd avoided the complexities of traditional twisting mechanisms and instead utilized the natural motion of the hands. This simple approach not only improves user experience but also enhances the product’s longevity and reliability.

“We are delighted to introduce a product that reflects our dedication to sustainability and innovation,” said Nathan Partington, design director at npd. “This plastic-free deodorant vessel, with its compostable refills, is a significant advancement in reducing plastic waste and supporting a circular economy.”

The new deodorant vessel is now available for purchase, providing consumers with a high-quality, eco-friendly alternative to traditional deodorant packaging, from the Give a Shift online store.
