Man United could hand transfer power to former adidas marketing chief

It’s being reported that Matt Hargreaves is set to lead Manchester United’s transfer plans this summer.

Hargreaves spent 6 years as Adidas’ Sports Marketing Director for Northern Europe, a role, which did include football players and scouting.

Since 2023, he’s been Director of Football Negotiations at Old Trafford, but with John Murtough’s resignation as Football Director, the i has reported that Hargreaves is likely to step up, at least while United search for a replacement.

It’s part of a number of changes taking place at Old Trafford, following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment.

The club is believed to be eying Southampton’s Jason Wilcox to become Technical Director, but still no agreement is in place with main target, Newcastle Sporting Director, Dan Ashworth – who’s on 18 months’ gardening leave, while the 2 clubs discuss compensation, Newcastle are seeking £20m.

With continued uncertainty over these 2 top jobs, its believed that former marketing boss and lawyer, Hargreaves will work with incoming CEO Omar Berrada to look at player sales and acquisitions.

Hargreaves started out as a trainee solicitor in James Chapman & Co in Manchester, before moving to Brabners and a secondment in United’s legal department. He was at adidas in Greater Manchester and Amsterdam for almost 15 years, initially as legal counsel, before becoming Sports Marketing Director.
