International Press Institute celebrates UCLan’s Made project


The University of Central Lancashire’s media enterprise start-up initiative, Made is one of the innovative projects being celebrated at a conference today in London.

The Media and Digital Enterprise (MADE) project was set up by Francois Nel at UCLan’s School of Journalism Media and Communication department. It works with creative individuals and teams who want to make and share news in the public interest – whether for civic, educational or commercial gain.

A number of partners which provide training, networking and mentoring includes the likes of ScraperWiki, TalkAboutLocal and Northern Lights.

Today’s event in London is held by the International Press Institute (IPI) to showcase Made and other projects which have won its innovation contest. A competition supported by The Guardian, and Google.

Grants of nearly $2.7m have been distributed among the 17 winners.

IPI in Vienna is a global network of editors, media executives and leading journalists looking to further and safeguard “press freedom, the protection of freedom of opinion and expression, the promotion of the free flow of news and information and the improvement of the practices of journalism.”
