Two of the UK’s most powerful innovation ecosystems are joining forces in a collaboration between the University of Manchester and the University of Cambridge.
The Cambridge x Manchester Innovation Partnership aims to unlock greater economic impact from world-class research, enterprise and talent — with a mission to accelerate the UK’s position as a global leader in science, technology and innovation.
Backed by £4.8m in funding from Research England over the next three years, the initiative will be spearheaded by Manchester’s new innovation arm, Unit M, and Innovate Cambridge. It also has the support of the two Mayoral Combined Authorities, local city councils, and a range of business and investment leaders.

A nationwide search is now underway for a Partnership Director to lead the high-profile venture — with applications open until August 11. Based in either Manchester or Cambridge, the successful candidate will be tasked with building a cross-city team, designing a nationally significant innovation programme, and driving inclusive growth across the North and South.
President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Duncan Ivison said: “The transformative potential of fully embracing innovation cannot be understated, both for the region and for the UK more widely. Unit M lies at the heart of the University’s ambition to power an inclusive economy, positioning Manchester as a central player on the global stage to accelerate growth for all in society.”
The director will play a pivotal role in connecting founders, academics, civic leaders, investors and government. They’ll be expected to shape strategy, secure long-term funding, and make the collaboration a blueprint for future regional innovation partnerships.
The announcement marks a bold new chapter for Unit M, the University of Manchester’s recently launched innovation hub, which aims to position the city-region as a global leader in inclusive, sustainable growth.
