Earthquake tech triggered by Taylor Swift fans

Standby Liverpool, for Taylor Swift’s Edinburgh concerts triggered seismometers around the city.

The British Geological Survey team (or should that be squad) have not just been recording the seismic activity, they’ve also seen how activity relates to specific songs and the crowd’s reaction to them.

“It’s amazing that we’ve been able to measure the reaction of thousands of concert goers remotely through our data,” said Callum Harrison, BGS Seismologist.

“The opportunity to explore a seismic activity created by a different kind of phenomenon has been a thrill.

“Clearly Scotland’s reputation for providing some of the most enthusiastic audiences remains well intact!”

Based on the Murrayfield data, each of the three evenings followed a similar seismographic pattern, with ‘…Ready For It?’ ‘Cruel Summer’ and ‘champagne problems’ resulting in the most significant seismic activity each night.

BGS has even given us a seismic Top 5

  1. ..Ready For It
  2.  Cruel Summer
  3.  champagne problems
  4.  Shake It Off
  5.  But Daddy I Love Him

Earthquake readings were detected up to 6 km from the venue, at the BGS office in the Lyell Centre.

Here comes some proper science: the dancing during the 160bpm … Ready for It? saw the crowd transmitting approximately 80 kW of power (equivalent to around 10-16 car batteries).

And the “most enthusiastic dancing” occurred on Friday night. This was based on the maximum amplitude of motion (the distance the ground moves). On Friday it was 23.4 nanometres (nm) of movement, versus 22.8 nm and 23.3 nm on the Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Taylor Swift’s Era’s Tour arrives at Anfield tonight.
