A well-known Leeds pair are joining forces to launch a new newspaper in the city.
Journalist and lecturer John Baron together with events organiser and blogger Emma Bearman are starting a new local website and associated concentrating on life in the West of the city.
Both describe themselves as long time residents and feel strongly West Leeds would benefit from telling it’s story, providing up to the minute news & facilitating conversations about the concerns and hopes of residents, organisations and businesses in the area.
And to kick things off, the duo are holding an event for people interested in the idea.
Bearman, who has a strong background in creating hyperlocal blogs around the city including the Armley Tourist Board and then The Culture Vulture, explained their motivation in the project.
“West Leeds is teeming with interesting people, happenings, stories and history and we’re keen to help those who want to unearth stories, get involved and develop a readership for this fantastic part of Leeds.
“We’re hoping to put some training together too so, no matter what your background or skills, if you’ve got the slightest desire to get involved, do come along and help us shape the future success of West Leeds Life.”
Currently the project is unfunded and the pair intend to seek funding to create a part time post for Baron, who previously edited the Guardian Leeds* website, to manage the site and newspaper.
Baron adds: “Ahead of our official launch we’ve already tackled local issues such as eyesore working mens’ clubs, the future of Armley Town Street, dangerous junctions and roads – we’re empowering local people with a voice as well as encouraging people to take part in hanging basket making, joining groups and taking part in local forums.”
Anyone interested in joining them, or simply finding out more about the project, is invited to register for the free event on Tuesday, 30 June 2015 from 7pm until 10.
