BBC One has commissioned a new drama from writer, Katie Baxendale (Sugar Rush), which will be filmed next year.

From Darkness is about Clare Church, who left Greater Manchester Police in the mid-90s, turning her back on “a world of misogyny and chauvinism” to move to the island of Canna. But as 4 bodies from her past are unearthed, she finds herself being drawn back into her old job.

The 4 x 60 minute drama is Baxendale’s first original commission by BBC One and it will be shot in the North of England.

It was developed by BBC Drama North from an original pitch, as part of the corporation’s Writersroom scheme. It was commissioned by Charlotte Moore, the controller of BBC One and Ben Stephenson, controller, BBC Drama.

Hilary Martin is the executive producer – she heads up the Drama North team and was also exec on In the Flesh, which was also discovered through Writersroom.

Casting will be announced soon.
