David Harewood joins cast of Beowulf

ITV has today announced that David Harewood (Homeland, Blood Diamond) is to join the cast of its epic new series, Beowulf.

BEOWULFIt’s currently being filmed on location in the North East, and Harewood will take on a guest role as warrior Scorann.

Last month, it was revealed that Kieran Bew (Da Vinci’s Demons, The Bletchley Circle) will play the title role, with William Hurt (Humans, Kiss of the Spider Woman) cast as Hrothgar. Also appearing are Joanne Whalley (Wolf Hall, Jamaica Inn), Ed Spellers (Downton Abbey) and David Ajala (Black Box).

Created by James Dormer, Tim Haines and Katie Newman, the 13 part series is being produced in-house by ITV Studios.

“Beowulf is a series with a charismatic protagonist at its heart,” said ITV director of drama Steve November

“Equally it’s a spirited and fascinating ensemble drama with each character taking their own emotional and sometimes perilous journey.  We’re delighted to be commissioning Beowulf and to be working with Tim Haines and his production team.”

Stephen Smallwood (Ripper Street, The Day of the Triffids, DCI Banks) is producing on location in County Durham and Northumberland.
