Gary Neville’s media empire takes on Netflix with major Disney+ deal

Gary Neville’s growing media business has secured a major deal with Disney+, bringing two of The Overlap’s flagship football shows to the global streaming platform.

The agreement will see Disney+ carry 40 new episodes of Stick to Football, alongside 50 episodes of new Manchester United-focused series Stick to United, hosted by Wayne Rooney and Mark Goldbridge.

Disney+ will also become headline sponsor of both shows for the 2026/27 season, in the latest sign of the growing value being placed on video-led football podcasts by major streaming platforms.

Neville co-founded The Overlap, which has grown from a YouTube football channel into a wider media business producing shows featuring some of the biggest names in the game. UK radio and audio group Global acquired a majority stake in the company in January.

Under the Disney+ deal, Stick to Football will continue to be available through The Overlap’s YouTube channel and other podcast platforms as well as Disney+.

The show is hosted by Neville alongside fellow former players Jamie Carragher, Jill Scott, Ian Wright and Roy Keane, with guests joining the group to discuss football and the wider game.

New series Stick to United will pair former Manchester United and England striker Rooney with Goldbridge, who has built a substantial online following through his Manchester United-focused content.

Goldbridge sold his media channels to The Overlap in April and described the launch of Stick to United as “an historic milestone for fan-led media.”

The show will analyse Manchester United’s results and major talking points throughout the Premier League season.

It will be available across Disney+, other platforms and The Overlap, although 20 episodes will be exclusive to Disney+ for a “limited time”. Disney+ has also commissioned six exclusive extended-length episodes featuring special guests.

Stick to United will stream weekly from Tuesday, August 18, with Stick to Football following weekly in the UK and Ireland from Thursday, August 20.

Neville, co-founder and co-chair of The Overlap, said the deal was a “unique partnership that feels right for everyone involved.”

He added: “What’s exciting is that we’re not changing who we are. Our community will continue to enjoy our content in exactly the way they always have through YouTube, while at the same time Disney+’s incredible global streaming audience will now be able to discover and enjoy it too.”

The agreement puts Disney+ alongside Netflix in pursuing football programming built around former players and established podcast audiences.

Netflix has backed World Cup editions of Gary Lineker’s The Rest is Football, highlighting the growing competition among global streamers for sports content sitting outside traditional live broadcast rights.

Sean Doyle, Disney+ EMEA’s VP, Unscripted, said: “As we move into a new era of sports entertainment on Disney+, we’re excited to be bringing one of the UK’s most popular and distinctive sports shows to the platform.

“What Gary and the team at The Overlap have created with Stick to Football – and now Stick to United with Wayne Rooney – is truly unique. Adding both shows broadens our local original content offering as we continue to expand into new sports formats, complementing our existing catalogue of drama, comedy, documentary, reality and ESPN on Disney+.”
