Emmy nominations 2026: Frontrunners revealed as Adolescence’s Northern success proves hard to match

Just 12 months after Adolescence well and truly put Northern talent at the centre of television’s biggest awards, this year’s Emmy nominations tell a very different story.

The Netflix drama dominated last year’s ceremony, winning six awards including acting honours for Stephen Graham and breakout star Owen Cooper, in a landmark moment for Northern telly.

But while the 78th Emmy Award nominations, announced today, feature plenty of British talent, there is little representation from the North this time around.

Instead, Welsh actor Matthew Rhys emerges as the standout British success, becoming the only performer to receive two lead acting nominations – for Widow’s Bay and The Beast In Me. Elsewhere, Gary Oldman was recognised for Slow Horses, alongside Riz Ahmed (Bait), Carey Mulligan (Beef) and Rufus Sewell (The Diplomat). Scottish actor Jack Lowden also received a supporting actor nomination for Slow Horses.

Overall, US medical drama The Pitt leads this year’s nominations with 25, followed by comedy Hacks with 24.

The nominees for Outstanding Drama Series are The Diplomat, The Gilded Age, A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms, Paradise, The Pitt, Pluribus, Slow Horses and Your Friends & Neighbors.

The comedy category includes Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Nobody Wants This, Only Murders In The Building, Shrinking and Widow’s Bay.

Meanwhile, All Her Fault, The Beast In Me, Beef, DTF St Louis and Love Story: John F Kennedy Jr & Carolyn Bessette are nominated for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.

Among the notable omissions, the final seasons of Stranger Things and Euphoria missed out on nominations for Outstanding Drama Series, although Stranger Things received seven technical nominations and Zendaya was recognised in the lead actress category for Euphoria.

The winners of the 78th Emmy Awards will be announced in Los Angeles on 14 September.
