First images of Aimee Lou Wood, Nabhaan Rizwan and Suranne Jones in Film Club

The BBC has released the first pictures for romantic comedy-drama Film Club, co-created by Sex Education and The White Lotus star, Aimee Lou Wood.

Film Club is the screenwriting debut from Wood and Ralph Davis (House of the Dragon, Big Boys, Othello).

Shot in Manchester, Wood and David also star, alongside Nabhaan Rizwaan (Kaos, In Camera); Suranne Jones (Vigil, Doctor Foster); and Liv Hill (Three Girls, The Serpent Queen).

“We couldn’t be more excited, and grateful, to the incredible team we have assembled with the BBC. To bring this to life with Nabhaan and Suranne, two exceptional actors I have always admired, is a real honour,” said Wood.

Made by Gaumont (Obsession, Locked In, The Wives, Lupin, Narcos) the show is set to air later this year on BBC iPlayer and BBC Three.

The series is about Evie (Wood) and the Film Club – her weekly escape, where she decks out her mum (Jones)’s garage out in whatever the movie calls for, and spends a few uninterrupted hours with her best friend Noa (Rizwan).

It’s more important to her, because she’s not left the house in 6 months, because of a “wobble.” But Noa tells her he’s about to leave the area and they have to work out whether they’re more than just friends.

The support cast includes Adam Long (Happy Valley, Masters of the Air) as Evie’s boyfriend Josh; Arian Nik (Daddy Issues, Passenger) and Fola Evans Akingbola (The Night Agent, Back In Action) as Film Club members Kam and Samantha.

Co-creator Davis is Film Club’s newest member, Dominic. Owen Cooper (Adolescence, Wuthering Heights) plays Evie’s annoying neighbour Callum.

The 6 x 30 minute comedy was commissioned by Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, and Fiona Campbell, Controller Youth Audience, BBC Three and BBC iPlayer.

It is co-created and written by Aimee Lou Wood and Ralph Davis, with Anna Jordan (One Day, Killing Eve) joining the writing team for episode four.

The series is produced by Gaumont UK with the support of ZDFneo in Germany.

Stella Merz (Gentleman Jack, Renegade Nell) is producing while Catherine Morshead (Daddy Issues, The Full Monty) directs.
