Gemma Arterton and Rupert Everett to star in new Sky drama filmed in Liverpool

Funny Girl - Sky drama

A new Sky Original drama adaptation series of Nick Hornby’s novel Funny Girl has started production and filming in Liverpool.

Actress Gemma Arterton will star as the character Barbara Parker, a beauty queen from Blackpool in the novel, alongside actor Rupert Everett cast as Barbara’s agent Brian Debehnam.

Actor David Threlfall, who starred as Frank Gallagher in the TV series Shameless, also joins the cast as Barbara’s father George. 

The comedy drama series follows Barbara Parker as she tries to find her comic voice in the world of 1960s sitcom. 

It was commissioned by Zai Bennett, managing director of content at Sky, Jon Mountague, director of comedy at Sky Studios and Tilusha Ghelani, commissioning editor for comedy at Sky Studios.

The comedy drama has been produced by Potboiler Television and Rebel Park Productions, of which Arterton is one of the co-founders, in association with Sky Studios. It is set to be released on Sky’s new channel, Sky Max, and streaming service NOW in 2022.
