Sheffield Doc/Fest announces full line up

This year’s Sheffield Doc/Fest will feature Michael Palin, Sigur Ros, Michael Nyman and screenings of 150 feature and short documentaries.

Running from 5th June for 6 days, the festival will have two opening night events, with the UK premiere of Joshua Oppenheimer’s  The Look of Silence, plus a world premiere of The Greatest Shows on Earth: A Century of Funfairs, Circuses and Carnivals, which is directed by Benedikt Erlingsson with a score by Sigur Ros.

In total there are films from 35 countries, including 31 world premieres, 13 international, 19 EU and 40 UK premieres.

“In recent years Doc/Fest has seen more and more documentary fans engaging with the festival and coming through its doors – last year over 26,000 people attended festival events, including 12,000 to the Interactive Exhibition at the Millennium Gallery,” said Mark Atkin, acting Sheffield Doc/Fest director.

“Doc/Fest is very lucky that Sheffield has so many incredible spaces within the city centre, which has enabled us again this year to showcase even more cutting–edge documentary across all platforms, including bringing a record 150 docs to the city’s cinema screens, collaborating for the first time with the Site Gallery with the Virtual Reality Arcade and again with the Millenium Gallery for the Interactive Exhibition, plus working with the University of Sheffield to bring Heather Phillipson to the iconic Castle House.”

The closing night will be at The Crucible, with the international premiere of Monty Python: The Meaning of Live. This will be followed by a conversation with Michael Palin and directors, Roger Graef and James Rogan, hosted by Josie Long.

Other headlines include filmmaking master classes from Joshua Oppenheimer, Jeanie Finlay and Brett Morgen.

There will be keynote speeches from Davina McCall and Nicky Campbell; historian and BBC TV presenter Lucy Worsley; and Jolyon Rubinstein, Heydon Prowse and Joe Wade, creators and presenters of BBC Three’s satirical comedy The Revolution Will Be Televised.
