Yorkshire Tea has led a move by tea brands to unite against Black Lives Matter opponents, telling one right-wing YouTuber: “Please don’t buy our tea again.”

Numerous brands have shared statements of support for the Black Lives Matter movement in the aftermath of George Floyd’s dead and the subsequent protests at the weekend.

On Saturday night, Laura Towler, a Yorkshire-based YouTuber, tweeted her satisfaction that Yorkshire Tea had not been one of them.

“I’m dead chuffed that Yorkshire Tea has not supported BLM,” she said.

But yesterday, the official Twitter account of Yorkshire Tea – owned by Harrogate-based Bettys and Taylors Group – tweeted in response: “Please don’t buy our tea again. We’re taking some time to educate ourselves and plan proper action before we post. We stand against racism. #BlackLivesMatter”

Its rival, PG Tips, added its support, replying to a tweeter who had suggested she would now be boycotting Yorkshire Tea in light of its stance.

It wrote: “If you are boycotting teas that stand against racism, you’re going to have to find two new tea brands now. #blacklivesmatter #solidaritea.”

Numerous Twitter users then showed their admiration for the tea brands’ position using the hashtag #solidaritea.

In February, Yorkshire Tea called on social media users to “try to be kind” after unwittingly finding itself in a Twitter storm when Chancellor Rishi Sunak using the brand’s teabags.
