Newsquest launches new weekly newspaper

Newsquest-logoThe Cheshire town of Wilmslow is to have a new weekly newspaper, it has been announced this afternoon.

Newsquest Media Group said the first issue of the newspaper will be published on the 20th May.

Its announcement follows the closure of the town’s previous paper, the Wilmslow Express, by MEN Media which replaced a total of six of its local titles with a Manchester Weekly News just last month.

Regional MD for Newsquest North West Limited, Chris Hughes, revealed that the group has been ‘engaging with business leaders and community groups over recent weeks.’

He said the plans had been ‘universally well received’ and added: “We need to see this support transfer into action now, with businesses supporting the title with their advertising budgets and the people of Wilmslow purchasing the title on a weekly basis. I have every confidence we can make this launch a great success.”

Editor of the Wilmslow Guardian, Carla Flynn, said the team were relishing the opportunity to cover a new patch.

“Local newspapers are at the heart of the community and we want to be at the heart of everything that happens in Wilmslow.

“The Guardian brand is already well-established in neighbouring towns. Our newspapers are more than 160 years old and people trust us to be their eyes, ears and voice. We want to build that same great relationship with the residents of Wilmslow.”

The Wilmslow Guardian joins Newsquest’s portfolio of Cheshire titles, which include the adjacent market town of Knutsford as well as titles in Northwich, Winsford, Middlewich, Crewe, Nantwich and Warrington.
