Next month’s World Taekwondo Grand Prix in Manchester will be the first taekwondo event to be screened live on British television since the Olympics after a deal was agreed with the BBC.
The broadcaster will air live coverage of the event on its Red Button service, while Radio 5 live will provide updates throughout the weekend.
The grand prix, part of UK Sport’s Gold Event Series which is aiming to build a legacy to London 2012, will see 250 athletes battle it out across eight weight categories.
All 16 world championship gold medallists and all eight Olympic champions are expected to attend, including British star Jade Jones.
GB Taekwondo director Steve Flynn said: “With just four weeks to go until the competition kicks off, the world’s best athletes are entering the final phase of intensive training and preparation in readiness for Manchester.
“We’re very excited about the new Grand Prix series and it’s a real boost to see the significance of the event recognised by the BBC. It’s fantastic exposure for Taekwondo, a sport that had such a huge impact at London 2012.”
The grand prix takes place at Manchester Central from December 13 to 15.
