A Manchester law firm says it worked on deals involving 40% of the estimated £1 billion spent by Premier League clubs during the summer transfer window.

Sports & Media law firm Centrefield LLP claims to have worked on transfers worth over £400 million, including several record deals.

The Manchester-based practice was established last December, yet says it has already acted on transactions involving 17 of the 20 Premier League clubs, as well as sides in the Championship, League One and League Two.

And its remit has extended beyond England to clubs in China, Russia, Africa, Europe, South America and North America.

In addition to player transfers and loans, Centrefield has advised on player contract renewals, as well as on a number of managerial and coaching staff appointments and departures.

Matthew Bennett, one of the founding partners of Centrefield, said: Not only have we seen an increase in the value and number of transactions compared to previous windows, but we have also seen that deals are becoming ever more complex – the increased value of deals probably being one of the key drivers of this.

“The combined effect of these factors has been an increase in the need for specialist professional advice for clubs, players and intermediaries.”
