From box room to boardroom: Liverpool SEO startup eyes £1m+ 2024 turnover

Liverpool SEO and digital marketing firm Quirky Digital is projected to post turnover of around £1.2m in 2024, less than four years after founder Liam Quirk set up the business in his parent’s box room as a 23-year-old.

Quirky now employs 13 members of staff at its Oriel Chambers, Water Street office and has secured over 50 clients across various sectors including healthcare, professional services, SAAS, investment, real estate, addiction and eCommerce.

The firm has also become become the official sponsor of Tranmere Rovers’ media suite, now called The Quirky Digital Media Suite, for this season, while lifelong fan Quirk has become an associate director of the League Two club.

Quirky specialises in local, national and e-commerce SEO and also supports clients with digital PR, content creation and technical SEO.

Quirk left school with just three GCSEs, and having realised he wasn’t best suited to a classroom setting was introduced to the world of SEO by his uncle while still in school.

He said: “Once I realised that I could break things and make them better than when I found them, I started building my own websites and completely committed my life to understanding algorithms and pushing the boundaries online.”

Over the years, Liam continued to build on his knowledge of SEO and in May 2020, he took the plunge to launch Quirky Digital, all from his parents’ box room at the height of lockdown.

He added: “I realised there was a real gap in the market for performance-based SEO across the UK as most other agencies were providing packaged style services.

“The day before Boris Johnson announced the first national lockdown, I handed in my notice, used all of the savings I had and worked from the spare room in my parents’ house to get the business off the ground.”

Alongside working with clients, the firm has its own portfolio of websites that the team use to test new strategies.

Quirk explained: “I want Quirky Digital to be ahead of the curve. These websites allow us to test new strategies before most agencies even know what they are. We also network with fellow industry professionals across the globe meaning that we’re uncovering new and exciting ways of working.

“We’ve seen exponential growth since I started the business back in May 2020. In less than four years, it’s turning over seven figures and we have a fantastic team that is constantly expanding. We’ve come a very long way since I was working alone in my mum and stepdad’s box room.”
