Rory Peck as he’s remembered on the Trust website
The Rory Peck Trust, the charity set up in Yorkshire to help freelance journalists, has announced a partnership which will see it offer safety training bursaries.
The Trust was in memory of freelance cameraman Rory Peck, who was killed in Moscow in 1993. Mr Peck’s widow, Juliet Peck moved to Healaugh, near Tadcaster, with their children after his death and in 1995 she came up with the idea of setting up the trust.
It will now partner with The Printing Charity to provide the bursaries to UK freelancers who work in print or online as journalists or photographers.
Director of the Rory Peck Trust, Tina Carr, said, “We are delighted to welcome our new partner, The Printing Charity, a highly respected UK organisation with substantial history and news industry knowledge, and one which shares our commitment to the welfare of individuals connected with that industry. We very much look forward to working with them.”
The bursaries will be distributed through the Rory Peck Training Fund, which was established in 2000 to make essential hostile environment training affordable for freelance journalists. Since its establishment, the Fund has provided hundreds of bursaries to freelancers around the world.
Chief executive of The Printing Charity, Stephen Gilbert, said: “Funding these safety training bursaries for UK freelancers is a natural fit with our work supporting people involved in the creation of words and images. We look forward to developing this scheme with the Rory Peck Trust.”
