Channel 4 has launched a new virtual work experience programme and expanded its 4Schools project.

Led by the broadcaster’s Leeds-based 4Skills operation, it’s introducing an online work experience programme to help young people match their skills to a potential career in the creative industries.

Aimed at people 16+, 4Skills Work Experience is a free virtual programme run in partnership with GetMyFirstJob to help users discover their creative career match.

It covers everything from coming up with an initial programme idea, to securing a sponsor and deciding when it should be broadcast and then analysing its success.

The expansion of 4Schools means rather than just focusing on 11-14-year olds, it will include those up to 16.

There will also be bespoke provision for students with Special Educational Needs.

The programmes include workshops, online exercises and talks with industry insiders and current Channel 4 employees on how to set about securing a successful creative career.

“We want to reach thousands more school students this year across the UK through 4Schools, students who might never have considered a career in broadcasting,” said Channel 4’s Managing Director Nations and Regions Sinead Rocks.

“And the free online 4Skills Work Experience programme will be available to anyone, anywhere in the UK and help match their skills with a career in the creative industry and help more young people kick start their careers.”

Currently 4Skills invests £5m in training, development and learning opportunities every year. This will double to £10m by 2025.
