A new radio station has launched in York today after a successful crowdfunding campaign.

YorkMix Radio, which has launched on DAB in North Yorkshire, has been set up by former Minster FM presenters after that station was absorbed into the Hits Radio Brand Network by Bauer Media in September.

Minster FM presenters including Ben Fry, Laura Castle, Victoria Charles, Tim Lichfield, Elisa Hilton and Paul Spence teamed up with online news website YorkMix to set up a crowdfunding campaign and raised almost £22,000 – more than twice the target needed to cover transmission costs for six months.

And the station went live at 6.30am this morning with a first song, Chasing Rainbows, by York’s own Shed Seven.

Fry, who presents the breakfast show with Castle, said: “They say never go back and I’m sure lots of people will think we are crazy trying to do this at this moment.

“But if you look round at the moment, people everywhere are going above and beyond and battling on and chasing that rainbow where we all get back to normal normal.”

YorkMix Radio is available on DAB, online at yorkmix.com, on smart speakers and via free smartphone apps.
