Sun FM has launched a campaign to find a million pounds worth of work for Wearside – and claims it is already halfway there after just a week.

The Sunderland-based station has created a section on its website for companies to advertise vacancies free of charge, resulting in 4,000 views and £500,000 of employment opportunities so far.

Sunderland has the highest amount number of out of work people in the country, with the Washington and Sunderland West constituency registering the UK’s biggest increase in the number of long-term unemployed – between 2012 and 2013 the number of over-25 adults on benefits quadrupled.

Local MP Sharon Hodgson said: “I’m delighted Sun FM are kicking off the new year by launching their campaign ‘A Million Pounds Worth of Work for Wearside’. This is an important campaign and I really hope local firms get on board and post their vacancies on the Sun FM website and the million pound target is reached as soon as possible.”

Sun FM’s partners in the campaign include Milltech, Manpower and The Foundation of Light.

Managing director Julian Carter added: “As the biggest radio station on Wearside we are trying to tackle some of the biggest challenges faced by the people of Sunderland. Together we aim to provide more motivation and opportunities for them.”
