It’s been confirmed to Prolific North that Christian Spooner will be leaving Real Radio/Smooth Radio to become BBC Radio Merseyside’s news editor.

He’s been at Real and Smooth for a decade, firstly as North West news editor and latterly as GMG Radio’s group head of news.

“We’re really looking forward to Christian joining us here at BBC Radio Merseyside as our new news editor.  He’s an incredibly talented award-winning journalist and will be a great addition to the team.  We’re looking forward to him getting started,” Sue Owen, managing editor at BBC Radio Merseyside told Prolific North.

Those awards include a Sony Gold for its Walking with the Wounded documentary last year as well as news team of the year at the IRN Awards.

“Over the past 10 years Christian has played a significant role in shaping the editorial sound of our stations. His high standards and keen news sense have ensured Real and Smooth have provided some of the most compelling news programming in broadcasting, recognised by the industry with many wins in the Sony’s, Arqiva’s, IRN and New York Festivals. We wish him every success in his future role,” said Real and Smooth Radio group programme director John Simons.

Spooner has spent much of his career within the GMG Group (now part of Global) – before moving to the North West, he was news editor at Real Radio Yorkshire.

“I’ve spent a wonderful decade with Real and Smooth and it’s been a privilege to work with the best news team in commercial radio. We have consistently raised the bar in radio journalism which has been recognised with a cabinet full of awards,” said Spooner.

He will take up the new role in April.
