Fans responded saying he was “a proper gentleman” and a “fantastic human being who championed the club with passion and class.”

In the 90s he was brought in by BBC Radio Lancashire to help transform its listening figures, which he did over 7 years, putting it ahead of all its other local rivals.

That success took him to BBC Oxford Road and his presence was described, at the time, as being like “a whirlwind” as he removed some of the station’s best known presenters and replaced them with the likes of Michelle Mullane and Diane Oxberry.

It led to the station achieving the best Rajar listening figures in its history.
